HISTORY
"The elderly women asked us whether we wanted all the knowledge regarding traditional medicine from our grandmothers and their grandmothers’ mothers to be loosed. They asked us to think about the way to conserve our culture and how to help improve health in our communities. In 1993, we started dreaming about how we could work to ensure good health for pregnant mothers and new born babies as well as to preserve our traditions.
We, the midwives from the area, organised ourselves and, in 1998, the Kichwa Midwives Women Association from the High Napo (AMUPAKIN) came true with 50 midwives. We are growing little by little and currently, we are 100 midwives, organised according to a Communitarian Midwives Network, distributed in 71 communities of the Archidona Canton
We activated a community health system, with an efficient service and self-managed, with the aim to improve the coverage of health supply for pregnant women, before, during and after gestation, reinforcing indigenous traditional medicine and preserving our traditions”.
We work in coordination with the Ecuadorian Red Cross, at the Provincial Office in Napo, with the financial support of the Spanish Red Cross, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI), Madrid Townhall and Valde Iglesias Townhall. We also count on Archidona Municipality’s support, Napo’s Health Direction an FONAKIN.
The project "A House for the Health of Kichwa Midwives Women from the High Napo” began in 2001. This project was developed through two extraordinary phases, with the name a “House for Life”.
The project’s objectives were:
• To cooperate for the reduction of child and maternal morbidity rate in the area.
• To recuperate and strengthen the midwives’ traditional indigenous knowledge.
• To internally and externally value midwives as an effective and reliable health system.
• To build spaces where midwives and traditional medicine can be strengthened.
• To encourage a healthy life-style in the community.
